How do you recognise domestic abuse when it is not physical?

Most people think of hitting. Far more often it is control: knowing where you are, reading your phone, money that is not yours, and the feeling that you have to justify yourself. It usually alternates with regret and tender moments, which makes you accuse yourself of exaggerating. Doubting is part of the pattern, not a flaw in your judgement.

What if I do not want to or cannot leave?
Leaving does not have to be the first goal and is often not the safest one. A helpline helps you even if you stay: thinking through a safety plan, putting documents somewhere reachable, agreeing who you can go to. In Belgium call 1712, in the Netherlands 0800-2000, in France 3919, in Germany 08000 116 016. In immediate danger: 112. Use private browsing and clear your history if someone can check.
