Your first session with a coach can feel nerve-wracking. You don't know exactly what to expect, when you'll see results, or even if it "works." That's normal — and precisely why this article exists.
Below you'll find a realistic timeline of what happens in the first 3 months of a coaching programme. No empty promises, just honest expectations.
The Timeline
Week 1–2: Getting to Know Each Other
The first sessions are about connection. Your coach gets to know you, asks about your situation, goals, values and blockers. This is the phase where the foundation is laid. Expect open conversations, possibly assignments to reflect on, and a first sense of "someone understands me."
Week 3–4: Setting Goals and Making a Plan
Now it gets concrete. Together with your coach, you formulate clear, measurable goals. What do you want to achieve? What does success look like? You get an action plan with steps you can take this month. This is often the phase where motivation peaks.
Month 2: Action and Confrontation
Real growth begins. You execute your action plans, encounter resistance, and learn to recognise patterns. This is the hardest phase — but also the most valuable. Your coach holds you accountable, helps you through dips and celebrates your small wins.
Month 3: Deepening and First Results
You notice things starting to shift. New habits become routine, you think differently, you act differently. This is the phase of integration — where change becomes part of who you are. Your coach evaluates your progress and adjusts the plan where needed.
What You Can Expect at Each Phase
Greater Self-Awareness
You understand better why you do what you do. Patterns you didn't see before become visible.
Clarity on Goals
Vague wishes become concrete, achievable goals with a clear path towards them.
More Confidence
By taking small steps and experiencing that it works, your self-confidence grows.
New Habits
After 3 months, you'll have integrated at least 2-3 new, positive habits into your daily life.
What Not to Expect
Note: Coaching is not a quick fix. Don't expect a radical life change in week 1. Real growth takes time, effort and consistency.
- No instant solutions — your coach won't give you answers, but helps you find them yourself
- No linear progression — there will be ups and downs, that's part of the process
- No therapy — if deeper psychological issues are at play, a good coach will refer you
- No passive process — you have to do the work, the coach facilitates
Tips to Get the Most Out of Coaching
Prepare Your Sessions
Think about what you want to discuss. The better prepared you are, the more valuable the session.
Do Your Homework
Coaching only works if you also take action outside sessions. Follow through on your action points.
Be Honest
The more honest you are with your coach, the better they can help you. No masks.
Track Your Progress
Keep track of what's changing. On MentraNova, you can track goals and tasks in the app.
